A painted band can change the feel of a pot without hiding the terracotta completely. Let the natural surface remain visible and treat the pot as a decorative outer container. Check the paint instructions for suitability before you begin.
Images are styled inspiration, not step-by-step documentation. Your finished piece may look different.
ONE STEP AT A TIME
Let’s make it.
Start dry and clean
Remove dust from the pot and let it dry thoroughly if you have washed it. Follow any surface preparation required by your paint. Protect the table and keep the inside of the pot unpainted.
Mark a simple band
Wrap painter’s tape around the outside to define the edge of your design. Press the edge down gently, paying attention to the textured surface. A slightly imperfect line can suit the handmade finish.
Paint light coats
Apply a thin layer of water-based paint to the exposed area. Let it dry according to the label before adding another coat if needed. Avoid thick paint that collects at the tape edge.
Remove the tape carefully
Follow the paint and tape instructions for removal timing. Pull slowly at an angle. Let the finished surface cure completely before handling it or placing it against furniture.
Use as an outer pot
Place a plant in its own nursery pot and protect the furniture with a suitable saucer. Remove the plant for watering and allow excess water to drain before returning it. Do not let water sit against the painted finish.
A LITTLE HELPFUL KNOW-HOW
This project is for decorative use, not food storage. Active time excludes drying and curing.
Enjoy it. Take care of it.
Wipe gently with a dry cloth. Do not assume craft paint is waterproof or suited to outdoor exposure.
